BIOGRAPHY

Since their fiery first live shows in early 2001, Melbourne-based Love Of Diagrams have been making an impact on the international music scene. The most recent evidence of their global reputation is Mosaic, the band’s new album for legendary American label Matador (home of Interpol, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo and so much more great music).

The band joins and draws from the long tradition of bands that have stripped the rock band back to its bare essentials and made it sound like a revelation, whether that be classic UK/USA post-punk, early 80’s pop groups such as The B-52’s and Pylon, seminal NZ Flying Nun bands The Clean and Bailterspace, or guitar drenched indie-rock bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and early My Bloody Valentine.

Love of Diagrams’ sound is based on the ethos of an earnest and equal communication between all four instruments, being vocals, guitar, bass and drums. There is an innate musical affinity between the three players: the incredible driving beats of drummer Monika Fikerle, the intertwining, angular tag-team guitar/bass lines of Luke Horton and Antonia Sellbach, and their passionate, immediate call-and-response vocals.

As a result they have quickly become a hugely popular live sensation as well as a critical favourite in Australia and internationally.

Their debut album ‘The Target Is You’ was released in 2003 to much acclaim and was followed by an extensive two-month tour of Europe and Japan. Then, after touring nationally in Australia with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Electrelane, Les Savy Fav, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and The Rogers Sisters, they released a new EP ‘We Got Communication’ in early 2005. This EP contained the single, ‘No Way Out’ which went on to receive airplay on many USA College radio stations and was re-released in November 2005 in the UK by the The Passport Label. ‘No Way Out’ has also been featured in the hugely popular TV series “The OC”. After two trips to the USA and Europe, including combustible performances at SXSW last March, 2006 saw Love Of Diagrams signing a worldwide deal with Matador.

Their new album ‘Mosaic’, was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studios with legendary producer Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma) and perfectly captures the urgency of their stripped-down guitar-bass-drums racket and call-and-response vocals.
